September 16, 2005 — With self-serve regular gas averaging more than $3 a gallon for the first time in U.S. history, everyone is looking for ways to conserve gas and save money. The editors of SheKnows.com have put together a list of 44 ways you can save money on gas. Here, find 11 of these tips. (Check out SheKnows.com/save-gas for the other 33 money-saving ideas.)
1. Drive smart: Aggressive driving (meaning quick acceleration, hard braking and speeding) wastes gas. In fact, it can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds, and by five percent on the city streets.
2. Choose wisely: Don’t assume that neighboring gas stations will have the same prices — check around. Also note that gas stations near freeways and popularly-traveled roads, as well as those in high-income areas, will charge more.
3. Just park it: Don’t circle the lot hoping for a great parking space. Take the shortest route to a free space and walk from there. Circling doesn’t just waste gas, but is usually ultimately slower than simply parking somewhere a little less convenient and walking.
4. Get pumped up: Keep your tires properly inflated and aligned to increase gas mileage by up to three percent. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by nearly half a percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are also safer and last longer.
5. Be cool: If you’re hot, don’t open the windows — they increase drag and decrease gas mileage, especially at highway speeds. Ultimately, using the air conditioner is cheaper to run, though you should try to minimize your use of the AC. When you can, use the vents to bring in outside air.
6. Go the speed limit: Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 15 to 20 cents per gallon of gas. Is it worth it?
7. Lock it up: If your tank isn’t secured, get a locking gas cap. With prices so high, you’re more of a target for siphoners if you’re not locked up tight. Locking gas caps are available at most auto parts stores.
8. Stay in tune: Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of about four percent (though your results will vary based on the kind of repair, and how well the job is done).
9. Close the gate: It’s an urban myth that driving a pickup truck with the tailgate down will get better mileage by decreasing wind resistance. In fact, a study published by the National Research Council of Canada says that despite what you’d think, keeping it down (or using a mesh tailgate in its place) actually has the opposite effect. When the tailgate is up, a bubble of air forms in the truck bed, allowing air to flow more smoothly over and off the truck — and without as much drag. (A tonneau cover works best of all.)
10. Re-think your route: Look into lesser-traveled routes where you can travel at a steady pace instead of joining in on rush hour traffic. (Your blood pressure will thank you for it, too.)
11. Figure it out first: Check maps (especially those online) before you go to make sure you know how to get where you’re doing. You’ll avoid the hassle, time spent and gas used by getting lost — or by having to pull over for directions.

Scottsdale, AZ / March 29, 2006: The stars have aligned — quite literally — and we’re right in the middle of the biggest-ever celebrity baby boom. Where better to get the scoop on it all than CelebrityPregnancy.com? The ultimate pop culture pregnancy site features news and gossip about gestating glitterati, including all of these expectant moms and dads:
Really, who can say that it’s not just a little bit fun to see these gorgeous, skinny, famous women putting on the pounds, getting swollen ankles and going through hours of labor?
== Oscar-winning actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Rachel Weisz and Mira Sorvino
== Box-office golden boys Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon
== Grammy winners Gwen Stefani, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana), Jack White (White Stripes), Chris Martin (Coldplay)
== Television favorites Mariska Hargitay, Jennie Garth, Fred Savage, Brooke Shields and Elizabeth Vargas
== Two screen legends are even going to be grandmothers: Sophia Loren (by her son, director Edoardo Ponti, and actress Sasha Alexander) and the late Jayne Mansfield (by her daughter, actress Mariska Hargitay, and husband, actor Peter Hermann).
But CelebrityPregnancy.com offers not only pregnancy and birth announcements, but also features famous baby news, star maternity style and other pregnancy- and baby-themed tidbits. “This is a site for people who want the latest who’s who of anything related to our favorite stars’ pregnancies,” says site editor Kim Grundy. “We dish on everything from an actress’ favorite maternity jeans, to the details of their elaborate baby showers, to the must-have nursery decor.”
Nancy J Price, former editor-in-chief of two national print pregnancy magazines and editor of both CelebrityPregnancy.com and PregnancyAndBaby.com, says she doesn’t believe that the site’s main attraction is about putting celebrities on a pedestal. “If anything,” she says, “I think it really helps make these actresses and singers and models more real to us — the everyday moms. On this level, we can identify with them. It’s that whole ’sisterhood of motherhood’ thing.”
And, like most sisters, there can be a hint of cattiness between the have-nots and the haves. “Really, who can say that it’s not just a little bit fun to see these gorgeous, skinny, famous women putting on the pounds, getting swollen ankles and going through hours of labor?” she laughs.
“Pregnancy is the great equalizer in life,” agrees Ann Douglas, bestselling author of “The Mother of All Pregnancy Books” and a frequent contributor to www.PregnancyAndBaby.com. “Money can’t buy you a ‘get-out-of-morning-sickness-free’ card — nor can it guarantee that you’ll avoid stretch marks and some of the other not-so-glamorous rites of passage. Maybe that’s why we’re so fascinated by celebrity pregnancies. We wonder how pregnancy is going to play out for these seemingly perfect people.”
Having each donut and every belly bulge memorialized by the paparazzi — that’s the cost of fame. “We all love to read about these ‘beautiful people,’ but really I can’t imagine living with a camera on me all the time,” admits Price, herself the mother of four. Her take is that moms shouldn’t feel bad about looking real — love handles and all. “If we all had a couple million dollars’ incentive to lose that baby weight, I think a lot more women would be fit and toned two months postpartum,” she says. “Until that happens, though, we’ll just live vicariously.”
CelebrityPregnancy.com — part of the SheKnows.com network — is online now, updated daily, and offers a guilt-free indulgence to all. (www.CelebrityPregnancy.com)

Please note that the sharing of information and an exchange of ideas is encouraged and welcome on our message boards. While you may not agree with every message posted, flames (messages which are insulting or inflammatory in nature, generally used to judge or criticize someone, to belittle their ideas or just to be abusive), put-downs and general rudeness are discouraged on the boards or elsewhere on our sites.

All the boards may be browsed here.
The rules:
- What you cannot post: Advertisements, chain letters, virus warnings, flames, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate on this board. NO ADVERTISEMENTS OR SOLICITATIONS MAY BE POSTED ON OUR SITES without prior written approval. Further, chain letters, virus warnings, flames, pyramid schemes, and messages out of context, the purpose of which is solely to generate traffic to another site, may not be posted. We will charge $50 per advertisement posted on the boards without prior written permission. (Your message will also be deleted.) The full amount paid to us for such spamming will be donated to a charity of our choice.
- Use of our Private Message system: Since SheKnows LLC owns these boards, we also own the private message boxes. We reserve the right at anytime to restrict a members usage of their private message box due to misuse. Misuse includes but is not limited to spamming and flaming of other members via private message. The rights and privacy of our members is our number on priority. To prevent spamming from outside sites, a member must have 100 posts on our site, before we will allow them use of their private message inbox.
-
Signature files may contain photos, personal information, titles, etc. We will also allow signature files with a one (1) line link (using a normal- or small-sized font) to your personal or business site. No images advertising or recommending off-site links are permitted, unless it is your personal, non-commercial and noncompetitive homepage. Links to, or advertising of, other message boards are not allowed. We reserve the right to edit or delete messages which are in violation of this policy. (When in doubt, please ask! :-) ) Users who continue abusing this policy may be denied access to the site. Signatures must be 550 pixels wide or smaller to prevent scrolling problems on our message boards. Members that have signatures wider than this will be contacted and if the signature is not fixed within a week, their signature will be removed. Please note, images in your signature that are pulled directly from a site that is not your own is not allowed. Please be sure that you are uploading images and blinkies from other public servers to your own private site/image hosting service, and linking directly from there.
- Usernames or user profiles deemed objectionable by SheKnows LLC may be deleted at our discretion without notice or explanation.
-
Information posted on the boards or on any of our sites should not be used as a substitute for medical care. If you have questions or concerns regarding your physical or mental health or the health of your child, please seek assistance from a qualified healthcare provider.
-
While SheKnows LLC and/or its moderators and community directors may monitor or review discussions, chats, postings, transmissions and bulletin boards on the Service, we are NOT under any obligation to review every forum and post, or even ANY forum or post. We expect you to be mature, courteous and thoughtful in your postings to our boards. In fact, as a rule our involvement in conflict resolution is minimal (unless we feel our intervention is absolutely necessary, which will be at our discretion). As situations intensify, we may suggest options forums can utilize to bring about change and resolution, but the job will ultimately rest on your shoulders. Each community has its own unique dynamic and we expect each of you to take ownership and be responsible for protecting what is important to you.
-
You acknowledge that SheKnows LLC, Inc. does not control the information available in the interactive forums and that any opinions, advice, statements, services, offers or other information or content presented or disseminated on any interactive forum are those of their respective authors who are solely liable for their content. Please note that we cannot confirm the veracity of any poster’s identity (i.e. we make no guarantees that any poster is who or what they say they are).
-
Messages express the views of the authors of the messages, and reflect solely on these authors. They are not necessarily the views of this community or any entity associated with this community. Offensive/objectionable posts may be removed at our discretion, but mostly will remain on the record where they can continue reflecting on the author(s) who posted them.
- SheKnows LLC reserves the right, in their sole discretion, to edit, refuse to post or remove any material submitted to or posted on any interactive forum without notifying the author. Furthermore, you understand that SheKnows LLC is under no obligation to remove that which
offends you.
-
You remain solely responsible for the content of your messages, and by using our boards, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless SheKnows LLC, Inc. as well as the makers of the bulletin board software, and their agents with respect to any claim based upon transmission of your message(s). Once you’ve posted your message, you will not be able to edit or remove it. Think carefully before you post something you know will be objectionable - it may hang around long after you actually mean it, as may the fallout that usually results. Furthermore, use caution when posting information of a personal or personally identifiable nature — these forums are viewable by the public, and posts may be included in search engine indexes.
-
You acknowledge that SheKnows LLC may remove any user and/or posting privileges from its message boards for any reason without notice or explanation. Posting on our boards is a privilege, not a right. While banning is done infrequently, once you’re banned from one or more of our sites, you’re banned. If you try to circumvent a ban, we may take further action. If you post on behalf of a banned member, you may also be banned. You may email us for an explanation, but we are not obligated to respond. (In most cases, people know why they are banned.)
- A word on censorship and “freedom of speech”: The US Bill of Rights allows citizens the right to free speech in a public forum without limitations imposed by the State. (”Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech.”) SheKnows LLC sites are not “public forums”; these sites are private forums open to the public. As a general rule, however, we uphold the ideals of the Constitution and do not condone the censorship of ideas. We allow relatively free and open discussion about just about anything. However, we do adhere to a simple tenet of respect. There is no place here for personal attacks. Debate, fault, discuss the action — and don’t abuse other members of the site. When in doubt, please remember this golden rule of message board etiquette: It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it.
-
Any communication or material you post or transmit to the Service is, and will be treated as, non-confidential and non-proprietary. You assume full responsibility for anything you post or transmit, and you grant SheKnows LLC and its affiliates the right to edit, copy, publish and distribute any information or content you post or transmit for any purpose. If you voluntarily disclose personal information (e.g. e-mail address) on a bulletin board or in a chat room, that information can be collected and used by other parties and may result in unsolicited contact.
-
You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this board to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy, or violative of any law. You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by SheKnows LLC. Share written material posted online (including articles, newsgroup and message board postings) with a link and no more than a few lines to serve as a description.
-
While we are open to feedback, public debate about how the boards are administered is discouraged. Keep in mind that we offer these message boards as a FREE service to their users and are not accountable in the way that elected officials are to their tax-paying constituency. Please contact us directly by email here to share your complaints or admin ideas. We DO take them seriously. When mailing us with concerns, you must tell us which site and provide a short description of the problem. Whenever relevant or possible, please include message URL/s.
-
We at this board also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you. Your IP address is recorded with every post you make.
Some other considerations
As a reminder for anyone who needs to have a refresher in message board netiquette, please consider the following before you post:
1. Does your message have anything to contribute in a positive way to the thread?
2. Would you say it to the person if she were standing right in front of you? Would you say it to your best friend or loved one? Are you calling someone names?
3. How would you feel and react if faced with the same message from someone else? If it would anger or upset you, you might consider re-framing your thoughts in a less objectionable tone. People are much more likely to see your point of view when it is sweetened with honey. Most people tend to shut down their minds to any different ideas in the face of condescension, insults or anger.
4. Message boards, unlike face-to-face conversation, lack tone and other nuances of expression. Be aware that when you post, what you mean and what others read may be very different! This is why “smileys,” or emoticons, were created.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and respect for all of the people who visit this board, no matter what their personal stance on any given issue.
If you encounter a problem
If you have any concerns about the message boards, please write one of the community directors, whose name you can find in the announcement at the top of each board. You must tell us which site, which board, and provide a short description of the problem. Whenever possible, please include the message URL (web address for the post in question, starting with http://), or, at least, the title of the message and name of the poster.

Submitting articles: Submit your completed work in the body of an email (we do not open attachments) in plain text format — not HTML — to feedback=at=sheknowsllc.com.
Changes/corrections: If you send your article and find there is a need for a change or addition, please re-send the entire work, not just the changed portion.
Attribution: When identifying someone you have interviewed (apart from a professional), please include full name or if, in some cases, we need to protect privacy, first name and last initial or first name only. We also like to include a city name or regional area (Tucson, San Francisco area, New England). If you change a name to protect privacy, please add a note to the end of the piece so we may add a disclaimer.
Quotes: Please do not change quotes. If it is in quotation marks, we understand that to mean that those exact words were spoken (or typed) by the subject. If need be, use quotes creatively with subtext (for example, to overcome a grammatical error), paraphrase, or request a new quote or clarification from the subject. Replacement text in brackets to identify a subject or to help present a change of perspective are acceptable.
Bio: Be sure to include an author’s bio with your work. This is usually 10-50 words letting our readers know a little more about you. If you personally or professionally have a particular passion for your topic, this is nice to mention, as is your general location. You may also include your email address and/or URL, although this may or may not be included in the final bio, at our discretion.
-->
Except for recipes and other special features, the article format on all of our sites is consistent:
Intro paragraph/sentences
Header for Section 1 (1-5 words)
Section 1 (2-4 paragraphs)
Header for Section 2
Section 2
… and on. (Please see a real-world example by visiting the site in question.) It is tremendously helpful if you can format your work according to this layout.
Sidebar notes: Related links and book mentions are welcome. If there is a resource available pertaining to your topic, please feel free to include this information in a note at the end of your article.
-->
If you’re interested in writing for us, please contact us at content=at=coincide.com. Please email us your query and a list of/links to published clips. If you are writing as an expert, please detail your relevant experience. (New to freelance writing? First get some advice here and here.)
Spec work: You may include your article for review along with your cover letter, but please paste it in the body of your email message, do not send it as an attachment. We will not publish your article without contacting you first unless you state in the email that it may be posted free of charge with appropriate credit (as is often the case with book excerpts, etc.)
Didn’t get a response yet? Follow-ups are more than welcome, but please allow at least four weeks for a reply before sending a reminder. Also, be sure to send along a copy of your original email when following up.
